Malenchenko, who is also an accomplished astronaut with multiple spacewalks under his belt, was a regular visitor to the International Space Station, and had been on a mission that was originally scheduled to end in August. His stay was extended a couple of weeks, and so the couple decided to marry in space. It wasn’t without its controversy, as some Russian space and military officials disapproved of the marriage.
